Top 10 Benefits Of Going To College Number 3 Will Surprise You!
Top 10 Benefits Of Going To College Number 3 Will Surprise You! I found I could finally look other people in the eyes when I talked to them without feeling embarrassed. My posture straightened and I stopped fidgeting around strangers. I began to voice my opinions as opposed to keeping my ideas to myself. As my debate rank increased from the triple to single-digits, so too did my standing at school. I began interacting with my teachers more and leading my peers in clubs. We still screamed our favorite Taylor Swift songs as if there was no tomorrow. Nothing could get in between the love we had for each other, even our vehemently opposing opinions. Patience, collaboration, and determination are all needed when climbing a wall, like in any field of research. I no longer say I canât do something, instead approaching challenges with the utmost confidence. Every time I interact with climbers better than myself, I learn a new technique and create new bonds. Being part of the rock climbing community has helped me develop my social skills. I donât have an answer to what exactly it is I want to do for the rest of my life. From each of my interests I learn things that contribute to who I am and shape how I see the world. And when I do have an answer, I will go forth with the knowledge Iâve gathered from each of my varied interests; and I will never stop learning. And when asked what to eat exclusively for the rest of my life, I will enthusiastically respond âpotatoes! Day by day, I began to stand a little taller and talk a little louder both inside and outside of debate. In a few months, my blood no longer froze when I was called on in class. I donât feel Iâve had a sufficient climbing session until my forearms are pulsing and the skin on my fingertips are raw. At first, I was an impatient climber who would try and solve the wall before me, making split-second decisions. However, this strategy rapidly tired me out after beginning to climb. Clearly, this method wasnât going to get the job done; I had to change my mindset. Now, when I approach a wall, I first draw the problem out in my mind, using my hands to examine the holds. For twelve years that was our beautiful home, and we enjoyed every moment together. Last summer, Emily visited my new home of five years, San Francisco, for the first time. We still laughed until our faces turned tomato red. If one plan falls short, I reassess and approach the wall from another angle. I am comfortable making decisions, even when I donât know what the outcome may be. Through this life-changing sport I have strengthened not only my body but also my mind, learning the beauty of problem solving. I love English and political science, but I have yet to find such an all-encompassing response as potatoes. What Iâve realized though, is that I donât have to sacrifice all for one. Like a game of chess, I lay out an intricate plan of attack. If I am completely perplexed by a wall, I converse with other pro climbers to guide me towards the best route. The best things about climbing is that there is no clear-cut way to climb a wall, and that there is always a new challenge. My climbing partners say that I take the most unorthodox routes when climbing, but ironically theyâre the most natural and comfortable paths for me. I get lost in the walls and climb for hours, as time becomes irrelevant. I think of nothing else but reaching the last hold and forget all of my worries. Even when my friends beg to go home from fatigue, I insist on attempting another route.

College Application Essay Coaching
College Application Essay Coaching Parents are blinded by love and perhaps perfection. Each student needs to be able to claim authentic ownership of their essays. Mom and Dad may be great help during the brainstorming process of generating essay topics. Parents may know other details about the student that they should include in the essay. Parents are also a great second pair of eyes for grammar and spelling errors. I would still suggest that a English professional still read over the essay for expert editing purposes. They do not know what admissions officers are looking for. For the same reason, I do not think English teachers make great admissions essay readers. Your English teacher reads your essay as 1 out of 30. The admissions officers reads as 1 out of 1000âs and possibly even 10,000 or more. Your English teacher reads your essay to assign one grade out of many. However, parents should not try to change the voice of the student, which can be difficult to refrain from. The essay needs to be a reflection of the studentâs creativity, writing ability and personality; not the parent. While it is okay to have a parent proof an essay, they are not always the best option. Asking someone who is slightly more removed from the application process may be the wisest route to go. While parents mean well, any constructive feedback may be misinterpreted, creating conflict at what can already be a stressful time. A strong conclusion will provide a sense of closure to the essay while again placing your concepts in a somewhat wider context. It will also, in some instances, add a stimulus to further thought. Since no two essays are the same, no single formula will automatically generate an introduction and conclusion for you. But the following guidelines will help you to construct a suitable beginning and end for your essay. Since the admissions committee is reading hundreds of essays, itâs your job to move them, make them laugh, and force them to realize that they need you at their institution. The admissions officer reads to determine if they should offer you one spot out of probably relatively very few. Many applicants will have high GPAâs and SAT scores, volunteer in a local organization, or be the president of a club or captain of a sports team. Admissions officers are looking for something, anything, to distinguish your essay from the pile. I recommend that students try to find an adult other than their parents to help with essay editing. In fact, your essay could end up hurting an application for an otherwise strong candidate if it appears hastily written or not well thought-out. In contrast, smaller colleges, especially liberal arts schools, tend to take a more holistic approach to evaluating candidates, since these colleges tend to be more self-selective and receive fewer applications. Therefore, they can devote more time and resources to each individual application. You might be surprised to learn that essays are that important, but keep in mind that at top schools, there are at least 4 academically-qualified candidates for every open spot. To truly assess an applicantâs fit with the school, admissions officers need the essays. Essays are your one opportunity to share your voice, your unique experiences, and your perspective. At the top 250 schools, your essays generally account for 25% of your overall application. This is only slightly behind the 30% for extracurriculars. Essays are actually ahead of the 20% for grades and coursework, 15% for test scores, and 10% for recommendations and interviews. I do not believe that parents make good essay editors because they are not admissions officers. Teachers, guidance counselors, even friends are viable candidates when looking for a second opinion on your writing. Introductions and conclusions play a special role in the academic essay, and they frequently demand much of your attention as a writer. A good introduction should identify your topic, provide essential context, and indicate your particular focus in the essay. Most of the essays you will ever have to write in your life will fall loosely under these four categories. Connect with our featured colleges to find schools that both match your interests and are looking for students like you. Essays are an extremely important part of the college admissions process. While certain factors may impact the relative influence of essays, you should always put in your best effort. Factoring in your particular interests, talents, and intended major makes the importance of the essay even more nuanced. If colleges see that your focus is writing and receive a poorly-written or uninspired essay, they will be confused â" and may wonder how well you understand your own strengths. Under no circumstances should you ever âblow offâ your college essay. Even if the rest of your profile makes you a top candidate for competitive colleges, your essay always matters.
Elite College Essay Consultant
Elite College Essay Consultant The brainstorming you do for the long essay may help you come up with ideas you like for the shorter ones as well. In order to make sure you have plenty of time to brainstorm, write, and edit your essay , I recommend starting at least two months before your first deadline. Wonky phrasings and misplaced commas can easily be fixed when you edit, so don't worry about them as you write. Instead, focus on including lots of specific details and emphasizing how your topic has affected you, since these aspects are vital to a compelling essay. Describer her decision to write an op-ed instead and interview other students about what the theater meant to them. However you structure your essay, you want to make sure that it clearly lays out both the events or ideas you're describing and establishes the stakes (i.e. what it all means for you). First, this trick is so overused that drives professors nuts; and second, they want to hear from you, not Hemingway, Musk, or Obama. Itâs your essay, so its tone of voice and personality should be yours. Parenthetic words bring no surplus value to your writings. They may serve as transitional phrases in informal works but become redundant when used in academic essays. Professors will consider it a trick to complete a word count rather than add value to your work. The simplest way to restrict the scope of your essay is to recount an anecdote, i.e. a short personal story that illustrates your larger point. If, on the other hand, you have more than one idea you really like, consider whether any of them can be used for other essays you need to write. As long as you're talking about yourself, there are very few ideas that you can't tie back to one of the Common App prompts. But if you're applying to a school with its own more specific prompt, or working on supplemental essays, making sure to address the question will be a greater concern. You can spend time focusing on the first sentence after you have a solid command of your argument and a perfect feel for the tone of your essay which may not be until you have written several drafts. Do not get bogged down before the rest of the essay is in place. Usually there is no real difference between submitting your essay weeks in advance and sending it by express mail on the last day. An office assistant will put your essay in the pile for your readers, all the same. The advantage of submitting your application early is that if there is a problem, you might be contacted early enough to be able to correct it. Your essay should add something to your application that isn't obvious elsewhere. Again, there are sections for all of your extracurriculars and awards; the point of the essay is to reveal something more personal that isn't clear just from numbers and lists. As for personal traits, Eva is really proud of her curiosityâ"if she doesn't know something, she immediately looks it up, and often ends up discovering new topics she's interested in. It's a trait that's definitely come in handy as a reporter for her school paper. I would also recommend starting with a longer personal statement before moving on to shorter supplementary essays, since the word essays tend to take quite a bit longer than word short responses. The advantage of taking extra time is what you might need to improve your essay. Scholarship and award essays have a lot in common with admission essays, but the standards for winning essays are much higher. Hundreds or thousands of applicants might be trying to win each spot. Grammar, spelling, sentence structure, organization, and content of your essay must be impeccable. Quoting and referencing are a must-have for academic essays, but this rule is about starting your work with a quote from a famous person. Many students become so focused on telling a story or recounting details that they forget to explain what it all meant to them. As I touched on above, the narrower your focus, the easier it will be to write a unique, engaging personal statement. The last thing you want is to end up with a low-quality essay you aren't proud of because you ran out of time and had to submit something unfinished. Before you get started, you should know exactly what essays you need to write. Having this information allows you to plan the best approach to each essay and helps you cut down on work by determining whether you can use an essay for more than one prompt. Contact a counselor in person or online and tell us more about where your student is in the essay processâ"starting from scratch, needing a second opinion on finished work, or somewhere in between. Our one-to-one format and innovative approach make scheduling sessions with your essay coach easy. Generally, sessions occur about once a week over four weeks, but session timing and frequency can be adjusted to accommodate your child's schedule and his or her upcoming college application deadlines. We know you're busy, so we work hard to make things easy. You can write a winning essay without having read any writing guides and without getting any help from others. Remember that early drafts of your first sentence should be just enough to get you started as you write and revise.

5 College Essay Topics You Should Never, Ever Write About
5 College Essay Topics You Should Never, Ever Write About These simulations occur at Model UN conferences, which can be regional, national, or international. Conferences can have anywhere from 30 to over 3,000 participants. Model UN is a simulation of UN organizations such as the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, UNICEF, and others. If your essay doesnât present any new information, it will be dull and forgettable. If you really want to make an impression, let your personality shine through. The essay is supposed to reveal information that you havenât had a chance to discuss elsewhere in the application. Itâs meant to be a deeper dive into who you are beyond the numbers and accolades. At the conference, students representing many countries and issues come together to debate their positions and agree on solutions. Every step of Model UN requires teamwork, whether itâs dividing up research assignments, writing a position paper, or creating a speech. At the conference, teamwork becomes even more important because you must work with the other delegates to come up with solutions that everyone is happy with and write a resolution paper together. Hands-on experience can make understanding ideas and concepts easier, looks stronger on college applications because it requires more work, and is often more fun to participate in as well. Now that you know what Model UN is, what are the benefits of joining it? In most cases, your essay isnât the factor that determines your admission to college. However, an offensive, off-putting, or forgettable essay can hurt your chances. By avoiding the topics listed above, youâll ensure that your essay helps â" instead of hurts â" your chances of admission. Make sure that your essay is more than a recitation of the accomplishments, activities, and experiences already hashed out in the application. Its participants take the roles of ambassadors from various countries and debate current issues. Model UN was developed in the 1950s as a way to give students hands-on learning in international relations, diplomacy, and the United Nations. Over 400,000 students around the world participate in Model UN each year. Why do writers seem to obsess over word count and page count? There are instances when youâre given an assignment, not by word count, but assigned by the number of pages. For example, âWrite a paper four pages long.â If you get an assignment to write four pages, one of the first questions that will likely come to mind is, âHow many words are in four pages? â If you need to figure out words per page, you can use a words per page calculator. Model UN is a great extracurricular for students looking to learn more about politics, current events, or international relations and for students who want to improve their public speaking or debate skills. Model UN can be a great addition to a resume or college application, and I've discussed four of its most important benefits below. After you have recruited members and set up meeting times, the next step is to choose which conference to attend. Currently, over 400 conferences take place all over the world. What more do we need to end the silly debate about the purpose of college as job training vs. life training? If we view it too narrowly as job training, we miss the purposeful elements that bring work to life. You can search online for conferences, and a list of larger conferences is also available here. For new clubs, you may want to choose a conference that is close to your school in order to make traveling easier and less expensive. The core of Model UN is its simulations of UN conferences where students role play as UN ambassadors and delegates. If you join Model UN, you will be doing a variety of activities, including researching, debating, and coming up with solutions with members of other countries. As we mentioned earlier, you donât know who is reading your essay or how they feel about these subjects. Itâs best not to offend them or make them feel uncomfortable. And if we view it too broadly as life preparation, we lose focus on the single most important aspect of bringing life to itâs fullest through work. Work is not just about a paycheck; itâs also about a purpose. Helping graduates achieve purposeful work may indeed be the purpose of college. The problem is that our national narrative about âcollegeâ has created a decidedly false dichotomy between the two primarily professed purposes of college. There is the camp that says college is about preparing a person for work â" to help them get a good or better job.
College Admissions Guide
College Admissions Guide I cooked, Jose cleaned, I dressed Fernando, Jose put him to bed. This is a great way to figure out the âbonesâ (i.e. structure) of your essay. A rectangular black and red sticker displaying the theme of the 2017 event. To keep things simple, one example and one insight per paragraph. Go to a college's website and click on a major or group of majors that interest you. Sometimes theyâll briefly summarize a major in terms of what skills it will impart or what jobs it might lead to. First, the author brainstormed the content of his essay using the Feelings and Needs Exercise. Without a father figure to teach me the things a father could, I became my own teacher. I learned how to fix a bike, how to swim, and even how to talk to girls. I became resourceful, fixing shoes with strips of duct tape, and I even found a job to help pay bills. Share all your brainstorming content with them and ask them to mirror back to you what theyâre seeing. It can be helpful if they use using reflective language and ask lots of questions. An example of a reflective observation is âIâm hearing that âbuildingâ has been pretty important in your life⦠is that right? For years Iâve been interested in the street artists and musicians in downtown Austin who are so unapologetically themselves. As a result, Iâve become more open-minded and appreciative of unconventional lifestyles. TED gives me the opportunity to help other youth understand new perspectives, by exposing them to the diversity of Austin where culture is created, not just consumed. Once youâve written down your qualities, examples, and at least 1-2 insights, try outlining your essay. â Youâre hunting together for a thematic thread--something that might connect different parts of your life and self. And, as I write these things down, I notice a theme of youth/old age emerging. Note that I couldnât come up with something for the last one, âknowledge,â which is fine. Read her essay below, then Iâll share more about how you can find your own thematic thread. I am a diehard Duke basketball fan, and I can identify all of the Duke basketball fans at my high school on one hand. Iâve gotten different Myers-Briggs personality types every time I took the test. I became a pescatarian this year to avoid fried chicken, and I can honestly get a lifeâs worth of meat out of cod, salmon, tilapia, shrimp, you name it. The theme of your essay is the thread that connects your beads. Imagine that each different part of you is a bead and that a select few will show up in your essay. I became as independent as I could to lessen the time and money mom had to spend raising me. Living without a father meant money was tight, mom worked two jobs, and my brother and I took care of each other when she worked. Next, the author used the Narrative Structure to give shape to his essay. With just minutes of focused work, you can map out your whole story. Theyâre not the kind of beads youâd find on a store-bought bracelet; theyâre more like the hand-painted beads on a bracelet your little brother made for you. As with the Type A essay, complete the brainstorming exercises described at the start of this chapter. No matter which structure you choose, these exercises help. Take special care to complete the Feelings and Needs Exercise, as it can be a powerful essay-outlining tool. For a brief period of time the quality of our lives slowly started to improve as our soon-to-be step-dad became an integral part of our family. He paid attention to the needs of my mom, my brother, and me. But our prosperity was short-lived as my step dadâs chronic alcoholism became more and more recurrent. When I was eight, my younger brother Fernandoâs birth complicated things even further. As my step-dad slipped away, my mom continued working, and Fernandoâs care was left to Jose and me.
Do Colleges Really Care About The Sat Essay?
Do Colleges Really Care About The Sat Essay? Should a crisis occurs in the classroom, students should have their phones on hand to make a call. If a student has a child, he or she may need a phone in case of a medical emergency. If the student is on call for work, he or she will need access to a phone. The list of exception-worthy scenarios is endless. You can use the first day to write a draft and do some minor editing. Then on the second day, you can look at the essay with fresh eyes to do your final edits. Cell phone restrictions in classrooms should also include specific disciplinary actions for breaking the rules. If a student is caught using the phone in class, he or she should be excused for the rest of the day. Professors should refrain from physically taking possession of a studentâs phone because of liability conflicts. If the phone is damaged while in the professorâs possession, the school or the instructor could be held responsible for the repairs. It is safer to ask the student to leave the classroom than it is to take the phone away completely. The best solution is to create cell phone usage rules that allow devices to be accessible without disturbing other studentsâ educational opportunities. Students should be permitted to keep their phones in their bags, pockets, or other belongings as long as the phones are on silent in class. Everyoneâs life is full of story, narrative, and itâs up to you to tell these stories in compelling ways. For years the Common Application had no length limit, and applicants and counselors frequently debated whether a tight 450-word essay was a wiser approach than a detailed 900-word piece. In 2011, that decision was taken away as the Common Application moved to a relatively short 500-word limit. With the August 2013 release of CA4 , the guidelines changed once again. CA4 set the limit at 650 words with a minimum of 250 words. What organization is issuing the scholarship, and how can you tie that into your writing? What is the underlying information they want to learn from your essay? Write in a way that shows you are the best candidate for the scholarship. Get all your thoughts on paper, and you can extend or shorten the essay during the editing process. Give yourself at least two full days to write the essay. The primary argument supporting cell phone control in the classroom is the fact that phones can be distracting. Not only do cell phones distract instructors, but they may also distract students trying to pay attention to the lecture. This is the same effect as a moviegoer looking at his phone in a theater. Even if the phone makes no noise, the light from the screen is enough to catch someoneâs attention. phone restrictions in classrooms should also include specific disciplinary actions for breaking the rules. And unlike earlier versions of the Common Application, the length limit is now enforced by the application form. No longer can applicants attach an essay that goes over the limit. Instead, applicants will need to enter the essay into a text box that counts words and prevents entering anything beyond 650 words. best solution is to create cell phone usage rules that allow devices to be accessible without disturbing other studentsâ educational opportunities. guments against cell phone control typically focus on safety concerns. No matter which side of the argument you choose, you should acknowledge the other angle and negate those statements. Vibrate settings may be permitted if the instructor does not believe it will distract him or her, since the noise of the vibration may not be noticeable in a large classroom. If a student needs to answer the phone during an emergency, he or she can step out of the classroom to do so. This setup would give the students and the instructor peace of mind. Arguments against cell phone control typically focus on safety concerns. As you will see below, we remark on why some students may not want cell phone usage policies. We will also suggest how to get around those concerns. Doing this provides the best possible support for your thesis because it shows you have taken every angle into consideration. Learn to write the perfect 500 word essay with this step-by-step guide. Includes sample introduction, body, and conclusion paragraphs. Use your 650 words to tell a focused story and help the admissions folks get to know you. Other students may want to use it as a checklist. Once they have written the first draft of a paper, they might compare their paragraphs to the list, noting what is missing and rewriting the paragraphs as appropriate. In the five paragraph essay, each paragraph had a topic sentence and then a bunch of support support which often consisted of a hodgepodge of examples sort of thrown at the reader in a kind of barrage. Always think about your audience when writing a scholarship essay.

Is It Okay For Parents To Help Edit Their Childs College Essay?
Is It Okay For Parents To Help Edit Their Child's College Essay? We've cooked up a bunch for you, based on, uh, who you are slash what you care about. Your goal should not be to include all of your accomplishments and activities . I quickly learned to play the clarinet and joined the elementary school band. As soon as I was physically big enough to carry around a mini Fender electric guitar, I begged to take guitar lessons. Perhaps it was subconscious at the time, but while many of my elementary school friends were playing sports with their dads, I was looking for a way to connect to my donor through music. During middle school and high school, my enthusiasm for music and performing accelerated in tandem with my talent. Resist the temptation to buy the âbest college essaysâ book. It will only contribute to the âparalysis by analysisâ you might be experiencing. The genius for your essay rests within you, not an essay someone else has written. The most engaging essays tell a story and have a clear focus. A thoughtful and detailed narration of a difficult time in your life tells far more about you than a list of competitions won and honors achieved. It would be tragic to turn in an essay that includes all of the above but is littered with misspellings and grammatical errors. Use the proofreading skills that you have developed to carefully read your drafts. Try reading it out loud to yourself or have someone else read it. Make sure you are reading it carefully and specifically for grammar and spelling. Here are 5 essential traits of a compelling college essay. Your essay doesnât need to have all 5, but college admissions officers look for at least one of these traits or possibly two. You need to craft a statement that speaks to who you are as a person. As you can see, the risk-reward element with the essay is very high, especially if you aspire to highly selective colleges and universities. While we canât write your essay for you, the following essay tips should be helpful in developing a personal statement that becomes the glue for a thematically cohesive application. A thoughtfully crafted essay and a clean, clear application can make a tremendous difference in the college admissions process. We have found that the #1 reason for essay procrastination is that students donât feel confident in getting started â" i.e. they arenât sure what to write about and how to structure it. Remember, in the grand scheme of the college admissions process, the application essay is a unique opportunity â" and an opportunity to be unique. Donât rely on spell check alone to catch all of your mistakes, either. Be sure you are using the correct form of words too (theyâre, their, there, your, youâre, etc.). Few things will throw off an application evaluator more than misspellings and typos in the college essay â" except when you mention the wrong college! Donât tell us how much you want to attend XYZ University when you are submitting the essay to The College of ABC. Once a student picks one or two of these to focus on in their essay, they are on the writing path to a stellar essay that describes exactly who they are and why they would be an asset to a college. Think of the college application process as a video game, and the dreaded college essay is the dragon that needs to be slayed. When I was in second grade, I read the essay for the first time and learned the donor was a professional musician and an accomplished guitar player. This knowledge was the catalyst for me to begin exploring my own musical abilities. Watch that you are using the same tense and point of view throughout your essay. Always read your essay over for grammatical and spelling errors one last time before you submit your application. If you choose not to disclose your disability in your essay or college application, remember, you may still disclose at any point after you are accepted into the school. You will need to do this to receive any of the accommodations and support services that you might need to be successful. To help youth applying to college navigate the college essay in order to submit their best work with their college application. In addition to pursuing instrumental music, I began singing in theatre and in an a cappella group. Eerily similar to the college application process, there were many qualified donor applicants. Choosing one donor from the pool of applicants was an insurmountable task for my mom until she realized there was an essay buried in the back of each profile. After reading my donorâs essay, she chose him because he spoke so eloquently about his passion for music and the arts.
How To Write A Great College Admissions Essay
How To Write A Great College Admissions Essay On the outside, I look like any smart phone, but when you open my settings and explore my abilities, you will find I have many unique features. After experiencing many twists and turns in my life, Iâm finally at a good spot. I crack the seal on the bottle, leaning over to smell what I assume will be a tangy, fruity, delicious pomegranate solution. The insufferable stench fills my nostrils and crushes my confidence. I didnât realize she would be the first of many patients I would tend to in this training room. Since then, Iâve launched a sports medicine program to provide care to the 500-person choir program. Laughter fills the show choir room as my teammates and I pass the time by telling bad jokes and breaking out in random bursts of movement. Even though I had friends, writing, and therapy, my strongest support was my mother. I was six when I first refused/rejected girlâs clothing, eight when I only wore boyâs clothing, and fifteen when I realized why. When gifted dresses I was told to âsmile and say thank youâ while Spiderman shirts took no prompting from me, Iâd throw my arms around the giver and thank them. My whole life has been others invading my gender with their questions, tears signed by my body, and a war against my closet. With her help, I went on hormones five months after coming out and got surgery a year later. I finally found myself, and my mom fought for me, her love was endless. I was lost, I couldnât see myself, so stuck on my mother that I fell into an âIt will never get betterâ mindset. On August 30th, 2018 my mom passed away unexpectedly. My favorite person, the one who helped me become the man I am today, ripped away from me, leaving a giant hole in my heart and in my life. The most important factor in my transition was my momâs support. She scheduled me an appointment with a gender therapist, let me donate my female clothes, and helped build a masculine wardrobe. I know what I want to do with my life, and I know how Iâm going to get there. Learning how to wake up without my mom every morning became routine. Nothing felt right, a constant numbness to everything, and fog brain was my kryptonite. I paid attention in class, I did the work, but nothing stuck. I felt so stupid, I knew I was capable, I could solve a Rubikâs cube in 25 seconds and write poetry, but I felt broken. The chaos of the show becomes distant, and I devote my time to bringing her relief, no matter how long it may take. I find what I need to treat her injury in the sports medicine training room. Overtired, we donât even realize weâre entering the fourth hour of rehearsal. This same sense of camaraderie follows us onstage, where we become so invested in the story we are portraying we lose track of time. I realize I choreograph not for recognition, but to help sixty of my best friends find their footing. Fifteen years and I finally realized why, this was a girlâs body, and I am a boy. Finally, after an additional seventy-two hours, the time comes to try it. The rollout plan for the iTaylor is to introduce it to the theater market. My goal is to use performance and storytelling to expose audiences to different cultures, religions, and points of view. Perhaps if we all learned more about each other's lifestyles, the world would be more empathetic and integrated.

College Essay Writing Tips
College Essay Writing Tips Though technically not a New Yorker , I felt, as Donne would put it, âPart of the main,â as I watched those buildings come down. Coincidentally, this was also the day my young sibling came down with a skin ailment that the doctors have not yet been able to determine what it is. With better understanding comes, I believe, the desire not to fly planes into each otherâs skyscrapers. The truth of this was brought home dramatically on September 11, 2001. Despite the fact that I was only twelve at the time, the images of that day will not soon ever be forgotten. While it is true that in northwest Wisconsin we donât have this particular problem, it is also true that I think about it on behalf of people who do. Also, I would like to work toward finding a cure for mysterious skin ailments. Candidly, I do not know at this point if I would be a pre-med, which indeed would be a good way to begin finding the cure. But I also feel that I could contribute vitally to society even if I were a liberal-arts major, for instance majoring in writing for television. Now, set a timer for seven minutes and donât stop typing until the alarm goes off. Once you have your first draft, you can move on to the revision process. Sit down and write about a project that youâre proud of. âIâm compassionate.â It might focus on your biggest accomplishment, such as the story of how you started a school debate club. The fundemental secret of a âwow essayâ is that it says a lot with a little. Talk about organizing an event or participating in a community service project that opened your eyes. Type up an honest page about someone you admire or the moment you discovered your favorite word or why you donât trust anyone who doesnât like macaroni and cheese. Even very simply put, you can find patterns in your own behavior. Categorizing the charity or community service events youâve participated in can also shed light on what you should write about. If youâre dead-set on a specific major, you can trace back where your interest began. eing âdedicatedâ and being âhard workingâ â" if youâre applying to a very competitive school, these qualities likely already surface in your GPA. Talking about them doesnât help you stand out or wow anyone, because theyâre just so common to anyone who is trying to compete at a really elite level academically. Remember each CHOICE you make, and each ACTION you take is read as a reflection of you. Many people in the world community, indeed probably most, watch television. Also the situation in the White House with respect to Mr. Scooter Liddy. To be precise, I believe that television could play a key role in warning people living on shorelines that they are about to be hit by one humongous wave. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the mindset ofthis-must-be-donethat we forget the primary reason for the presence of a personal essay. These papers, which usually clock in around 700 words, are designed to add some color to your transcript, which is pretty much all numbers and facts. Itâs also the idea that you think in terms that transcend the bubble that is your high school, or the horizon that is your current situation. It may be career ambition, but it also may be something more abstract, a personal mandate. College want people who are going to change the world. That usually doesnât happen by accident, but rather, it happens because people have a vision they realize. Be sure you are an ACTIVE person on the page and not just an observer. It helps me feel like I know you better, makes me like you, and impresses me in some way. Itâs not only a piece of writing that convinces me I want to go have coffee with you once you get to campus. It also often highlights some kind of insight, some emotional moment where I nod along, feeling the epiphany as you communicate some truth of humanity.
My College Options
My College Options Quite simply, a great college essay helps illuminate who you are. The worst things you can do is write an essay that is generic, one where if your name was replaced by another, the reader could not tell the difference. The people in the admissions office are trying to learn about you and the essay is often the last chance you have to shape their impression and understanding of you. A great college essay is one that makes your reader want to get to know you better, to engage in a conversation with you. It takes readers into, through, and beyond the story in 500 words or less. A great essay tells a a unique story that communicates key qualities you can offer the college. You can contact me for samples as I collect great essays from the students with whom I work. College Essay Essentials is my go-to resource when working with my students on their college essays. His brainstorming exercises uncover lots of material to help students of all ages write essays in their voice. I started using some of Ethan's methods to help students get started on their essays a couple of years ago based on some of the content on his website and a seminar I attended, given by Ethan. Additionally, you might email an admissions counselor at the school with some questions or speak to a current student or alum. (If you donât know anyone affiliated with the school, try asking your guidance counselor if there are former students from your high school who attend or attended X college.) Peruse a course catalog. These steps will help you develop a list of specific qualities that are unique to the school. The college essay is often the most difficult part of preparing your application. It is an essay that makes your reader laugh or cry or think. The best college essays deal with specific examples from the writerâs life. They are not general or abstract, the more details the better. The best essays are 20% about the âtopicâ (the âwhatâ) and 80% about the writer. A great college essay grabs your attention from the first sentence. To help you get off to a good start, weâve put together the following tips and hints. These are comments from our admissions staff who actually read your essays and evaluate them in the admission process. That being said, the essay is something you can control so you want to make it good. That is why a great college essay is personal. This great essay is very visual and helps make you become 3-D for the reader. It starts right away with a specific story from running a marathon in the rain to spilling water on customersâ"twiceâ" and keeps us engaged from the first word to the last. You need the essay to wow them with your personal qualities while sharing an engaging story, perhaps- a snapshot of your life. The tone could be funny or sad, reflective or poignant, but you NEED that reader to like you, so that they would support your application in admissions. If your essay does not reveal some sense of your best personal qualities are i.e. maturity, leadership or compassion then it has failed. Few things are as eternal as the search for the great college essay. We canât guarantee results, but this advice might help you get started. Find The Perfect Topic + Write With Style With Julie, College Essay Coach
Find The Perfect Topic + Write With Style With Julie, College Essay Coach The essay is your opportunity to reveal that element of diversity that can be found uniquely within you. Youâll hear a lot from âexpertsâ about taboo topics (sports, death, disease, divorce, pets, etc.) and generic essays on related topics are not a good idea. On the other hand, if you have experienced something intensely personal and profoundly meaningful within such a topic, help the reader to know how the experience affected you. Too often students get stuck on the choice of a prompt and never get to the essay itself. The purpose of the college essay is to get into college. Every piece of advice you have ever received on the purpose of the college essay is wrong. Get the college essay help you need, right when you need it with the convenience of online lessons. To that end, use the space to explore why youâre a mutual fit. It can be especially helpful to use a story or anecdote (just not, âIâve had a Yale sweatshirt since I was 10â). It is best not to recite the facts of your life. Instead, take the reader between the lines to better understand you, as a thinking person. Colleges value diversity of thought in their classrooms. The Common App essay prompts are not requirements; they are ideas designed to stimulate a creative thought process. Focus instead on the key messages you want to convey and develop a storyline that illustrates them well. There is a very good chance an essay developed in this manner will meet at least one of the listed essay prompts. Selective colleges are most interested in students whose sense of purpose is illustrated in their recognition of compatible learning opportunities on their campuses. When they ask the âwhy do you want to come hereâ question, they are not interested in knowing whether you can recite their institutional superlatives. It makes it easier for your essay to make an impact on your admissions if you carefully pick a prompt, unlike the majority of applicants. By the time someone is considering your essay, they have reviewed your grades, your scores, two teacher recommendations and a guidance report, and your activity list. Do not âwriteâ seven paragraphs of conclusion and your thoughts; content is writerâs craft. Introductions and conclusions are editorâs craft. Choose one that focuses on a specific anecdote rather than the three asking for your whole life story. They know you in most ways that are relevant to admit you to a school. Letâs figure out what helps you get in instead. What will get you into college is writing an essay that will be distinguished from the rest. Rather, they want to see if you have made the conscious connection between your sense of purpose and the opportunities that exist within their educational environment. The manner in which you like to engage in learning. We donât all process the same information the same wayâ"and colleges donât all deliver it in the same manner! This is especially true if you are an experiential, hands-on learner who values testing ideas. Combining your larger reasons with the specific details paints a clear picture of why this is the right college for you. Use the details to ground the bigger-picture aspects of your story. For instance, if youâre applying to Cornellâs School of Hotel Management, you might describe how youâve been collecting hotel brochures since you were a child in the hope of one day opening your own. That, combined with your desire to be on a large, rural campus with deep ties to the surrounding town â" and work every job possible in a student run hotel â" made you know Cornell was the school for you. This essay is about your relationship with the school, not solely the school itself. In fact, itâs really more about you than the college â" how and why you will thrive there. Be prepared to provide evidence of this learning style in your supplemental essays. Selective institutions often employ supplemental essay prompts to sort the whimsically submitted applications from those that are more intentional. They can clearly demonstrate the synergy that exists between themselves and the institutions in question. All are historical elements of your college applications.
College Admissions
College Admissions If you begin taking these steps well ahead of your deadline, you should have plenty of time to read through your own work, make revisions, share your essay with others, and incorporate feedback into future drafts. So whatâs the takeaway from this array of unexpected, possibly even bizarre essay questions? Well, first of all, you can presume that some admissions officers are just bored of essays about challenges youâve overcome or experiences that have changed you. They want to see how you function when removed from the safe confines of formula and expectation. On the subject of essay prompts, Meredith points out that the 7 variations offered by the Common App are designed to give all applicants the opportunty to share something meaningful about themselves. The info session was intimate â" more so than any other I have attended â" with a relatively select group of students offered full campus access. Bob Davis â12, my tour leader, was extraordinarily patient, walking me through U.Chicagoâs outstanding array of clubs and societies, including the MSAC Committee. U.Chicago is one of the only schools I am considering that even offers a student-led Diversity Committee, much less one that advises faculty and university management on key outreach issues.Outstanding. For similar categories of essays, Rachel plans to write one rough essay, then tweak it for different colleges. Now Rachel goes through her collegesâ essay prompts and groups similar essays together to come up with a list of what she has to write. The paradox of the overzealous editing of the college essay by many helicopter parents is that they donât know what a college essay is really about. Unlike the other parts of the application, where high grade point averages and SAT scores reign supreme, the essay is less about being impressive than it is about being authentic. Putting your ideas into the right words may take time. Donât procrastinate on this part of your application. Once you zero in on your topic, itâs time to organize your ideas. You might want to use an outline, laying out your main points, developing supporting ideas, and sequencing your thoughts logically. This should help you to organize a clear rough draft. Still another essay I had a student complaining about how she didnât like traditional school so switched to homeschooling. But here, wouldnât colleges wonder whether she could handle âtraditionalâ college? The college essay provides a good opportunity to leave a long-lasting impression on the reader, apart from the interview and an efficient way to let the people in the admission know you closely. A person they like and remember through the college essay is most likely to be selected. Many selective colleges and universities have their own essay prompts. Other colleges may simply offer you free writing space to provide a personal statement. However, the Common Application is perhaps the best starting point for anticipating likely college essay prompts. Cited a few real-world examples of college essays that actually worked. This topic is too broad and too loaded, whether you want to write about God, your mom or best friend. In addition to making sure that all of these things are included, you should also be aware of HOW you write your essay. If you procrastinate on writing your essays and wait until the last minute, you may miss out on a valuable opportunity to have them read by a fresh pair of eyes. It is also abundantly clear when you have rushed through your essays just to check a box. This does not mean that you can only write an interesting essay if you have had an experience that no one else has ever had. When my best friend John Smith â20 told me about U.Chicagoâs diverse campus environment , I was excited, but skeptical â" diversity can mean different things to different people. So I went to see for myself, visiting on September 9th, 2017. If your reader is one paragraph in and thinking, âI donât have a clue what this student is talking about,â youâve moved from arousing interest to creating confusion. Itâs certainly possible and often effective to begin your essay with a description that piques interest without necessarily revealing exactly what the description is about. But while enticing and intriguing are good, bewildering and unintelligible are not. Good essays are always quite personal without being sentimental. Another very simple tip, but many of the less compelling essays we read each year fail to focus. It was right there in the last sentence of the first paragraph of Mikeyâs college essay. I was supposed to believe this typical high school senior, who had inhabited this planet for a slight 17 years, chose to use the word âhenceforth.â Mikey was a good kid. Membership includes a 10% discount on all editing orders. Some students try so hard to be creative, or to entice the reader with a sense of intrigue, that they sacrifice clarity. Admissions committees want essays to be concise â" you want to make your point in about 700 words or less. You should also make sure that your essay is coherent â" that your ideas flow and your arguments make sense. Donât be afraid to show off your writing skills, but donât do anything that takes away from your core message. This video shows you how to write an effective college admissions essay. Finally, Rachel has a detailed list to work from.
How To Write A Great College Admissions Essay
How To Write A Great College Admissions Essay How many officers read the college essay varies. Some colleges have a team of people read each file. Others divide them up, and then only share files that require further discussion. There is not one way that all colleges work, so I always tell students to assume everyone in the admissions office could their essays so that they cannot write anything that anyone and everyone cannot read. So, you are recommended to check high-quality college essay samples for you to create a powerful paper. Also, you can subscribe for an insider blog to read the posts of applicants who share their valuable experience in writing essays. If you find it difficult to create a strong paper on your own, you can always contact experts, and they will guide you and give a helping hand. Well, you just need writing professionals in your life. It also depends on the school as to how many people will read an application essay. I know of a school where the complete application is read and the passed to another counselor who must agree with the decision of the first counselor. If that does not offer, then the application is passed on to another reader. A guide to writing a powerful personal statement for college admission. Also I believe that students should believe that the more people who read an essay the better as these essays should really captivate and engage readers and help them see why you belong on their campus. It really depends on the schools to which you are applying. Many students try to sound smart rather than sounding like themselves. Others write about a subject that they don't care about, but that they think will impress admissions officers. College admissions officers are very busy and only want to read essays that help them make admissions decisions. Now you know why college admissions require applicants to write an essay within a certain limit. Want to make a good impression or even get a scholarship? A well-written application paper opens a lot of great opportunities in front of you. These tend to be smaller liberal arts schools or small selective programs within a larger university. Other schools may only read an essay if there is some question/s about the other parts of the application or there is a scholarship component and the answer to the essay has influence over that decision. It is always best however, to ask each school this very question and to understand exactly what they are looking for from the applicant in their answer. I always tell students that they should be writing and essay that is to be published in the New York Times. If you would not want to see the work you are submitting published there in such a public way, then it is probably not in an acceptable form to submit for your application. Ultimately, your essay will be evaluated on the information you present, not on the number of paragraphs in the essay. Interview people who might be experts in the subject. Choose the best topic idea from among your list and begin moving forward on writing your essay. But, before you move forward, take heed of these topics to avoid. Once you have a list of possible topics, it's time to choose the best one that will answer the question posed for your essay. You want to choose a topic that is neither too broad nor too narrow. Assuming five psychological effects have been identified, you can assume youâll need to write five paragraphs if you are going to write a relatively in-depth essay. For example, if you are writing an essay on childhood development and exposure to technology, you will want to look into the physical, psychological and cognitive developmental effects of tech on kids. When you research this topic, you will find that there are contrasting points of view and researchers have identified several physical, developmental, and psychological effects of technology use in children. In its simplest form, an essay can consist of three paragraphs with one paragraph being devoted to each section. This will also make it easier to cite your sources when writing your final essay. Once you have done your brainstorming and chosen your topic, you may need to do some research to write a good essay. Go to the library or search online for information about your topic. Proponents of the five paragraph essay say that the body text should consist of three paragraphs, but in reality, itâs fine to write more or fewer paragraphs in this section. There are a lot of people who say an essay should be five paragraphs, but itâs an extremely limiting rule, and unless youâve been instructed to write a five paragraph essay, thereâs no reason to stick to it. Start by writing the thesis statement at the top, and then write a topic sentence for each paragraph below that. This means you should know exactly what each of your paragraphs is going to be about before you write them. So, no matter how short your essay is, you should still need 3 paragraphs. If you are really for some reason writing a 100 word essay, then you should have one short sentence for both your introduction and conclusion. Paragraphs structure information into sub-topics, and they make your work easier to read and understand thanks to the structure they provide. Your thesis statement is the main point of your essay. It is essentially one sentence that says what the essay is about. You should usually state your thesis in your introductory paragraph. Keep your research organized so it will be easy for you to refer back to. Use clustering or mind mapping to brainstorm and come up with an essay idea. This involves writing your topic or idea in the center of the paper and creating bubbles of related ideas around it. You cannot write an essay unless you have an idea of what to write about. Brainstorming is the process in which you come up with the essay topic. You need to simply sit and think of ideas during this phase. Early in your academic life, teachers and lecturers may give you both a structure for your essay and a guideline on how long each part of the essay should be. After all, if the teacher is allocating 80 marks for content in total and you can see 50% of the mark relates to a certain part of the essay, then 50% of your essayâs words should be devoted to that section.
How To Write An Effective College Essay
How To Write An Effective College Essay 500-word essays do not have to be exactly 500 words, but they should be as close as possible. The essay prompt may say âin under 500 wordsâ or âin at least 500 words,â which would state whether 500 is the minimum or maximum word count. If that information is not specified, write as much as you need to comprehensively address the prompt without frivolous content. Instead of just having her do the kind of grunt work nurses usually get stuck with, they have her do some of the procedures that the med students usually do. Carol looks uncomfortable with this, but she does well. At the end of the episode, she and Kerri Weaver get into a fight about how to treat a mother whose kid died, and Carol decides that she wants to be a nurse because she loves what she does and is good at her job. However, students are more concerned when they can 't get their paragraphs to be even a third of a page long. They usually think this is because they simply have nothing more to say, which in argumentative writing is not usually the case. Usually the inability to get paragraphs to be long enough is the result of writing paragraphs that are missing key components. If our thesis was that cell phones should NOT be controlled in college, we would explain the dangers of not having access to cell phones. You should approach all essays with the same mentality, regardless of their length. Your goal is to compose a piece that clearly guides the reader through your thoughts and reasoning. You may have to adjust how you convey those thoughts based on the length. Your essay should always have a beginning, middle, and end. Another scholarship essay length you may encounter is 1,000 words. They sometimes begin with a short summary analysis of what has previously been written on a topic, which is often called a literature review. In France, several writers produced longer works with the title of essai that were not true examples of the form. However, by the mid-19th century, the Causeries du lundi, newspaper columns by the critic Sainte-Beuve, are literary essays in the original sense. Other French writers followed suit, including Théophile Gautier, Anatole France, Jules Lemaître and Ãmile Faguet. To Write An Extraordinary College Essay, Tell An Ordinary Story
To Write An Extraordinary College Essay, Tell An âOrdinaryâ Story Given their testing page, I find it hard to believe that they are rejecting students for not having an essay score. We will be leaving it up, however, until we get clearer guidance from the school. The did say that a single test with an essay is fine. That said, I donât like to stand in the way of students motivated to retest. If he has the time and the desire, he could take the ACT again on Feb 8. He shouldnât count on his Writing score making a difference. I donât know of any superscoring school that will not superscore across ACT and ACT with Writing. As you may have read, the essay is becoming less important every year â" even at Duke. If you feel that you would do well or would like to keep all of your options open, then I would encourage you to spend the extra time to take Writing. Either way, it will not hurt your ability to superscore. If you really can't find any length guidelines anywhere on the admissions website and you're at a loss, I advise calling the admissions office. They may not be able to give you an exact number (in fact, they probably won't), but they will probably at least be able to tell you how long most of the essays they see are. (And keep you from writing a panicked, 20-page dissertation about your relationship with your dog). So even though there's no word limit, they'd like somewhere in the 4-10 pages range. High school students are not usually writing papers that are longer than 10 pages anyways, so that isn't very limiting. That being said, do not call our office in a panic if you discovered a missing article or a misused âitsâ after you hit submit. Because of our holistic selection process, no student will be denied based on one element of his or her application; this includes typos. Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. If you really feel that you will do poorly or that the anxiety might negatively impact the rest of your test, you should be OK without it. My son took the ACT without writing as a junior and received a 34 composite . He retook it as a senior with writing and also received a 34 composite , but only received an 8 on the writing portion. The only other difference between the 2 scores is that he got a 36 Reading/35 Science on the first ACT, and 35 Reading/36 Science on the second. For competitive schools that donât require the writing portion, would you recommend that he submit his first score without the writing, or the second? Warn students not to write about high-minded topics or exotic locales simply to impress the reader. Beyond gaining insight into your personal psyche, the purpose of the essay is also to showcase your written communication skills. Treat this essay just like any class assignment â" write it early, proof and revise, keep an eagle eye out for spelling and grammatical errors, and make sure it is presented in a clean and polished way. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, weâre probably going to notice. Donât try to guess what the reader wants to hear. If you ask a hundred different admissions counselors what their favorite kind of essay is, you will likely get a hundred different answers. Instead of trying to game the system, focus on the things that get you excited. If nothing else, I promise that passion will show through. Thatâs a difficult question to answer because of all of the potential factors. Have you had a practice essay scored to know where you stand? Also, donât expect an essay score to stand out in the same way that your ERW and M scores might. Some colleges feel that removing ârecommendedâ would mean that they are diminishing the importance of writing as a skill. Thatâs not the same thing as saying that it is important to them in the admission process. Iâm thinking the first is probably a better choice for him (especially for liberal arts colleges/universities), but wanted to get your thoughts. 8 falls within the 25th-75th range of enrolled students at even Berkeley and UCLA.
